The Sexual Contract

Why must women wear makeup?
How are we encouraged to be free, independent individuals while monogamous, two-person partnerships are upheld as the ultimate relationship?
Why do we accept that women, by October 15, effectively work for free for the rest of the year?
How did patriarchy arise?

The Sexual Contract is inspired loosely by political theorist Carole Pateman’s seminal work of the same name. This production twists and re-examines history to uncover how and why patriarchy came into being. Through a visually rich, kinetic, and interactive stage vocabulary, the piece investigates how Western society is built upon an unspoken social contract one we all accept, often unknowingly. It illuminates how this silent compact shapes our families, our relationships, our thoughts, and our lives. If the patriarchal system belongs to the past what, then, does the future hold?
